Teaching Methods

I have an integrated approach to teaching, using 'simultaneous learning' methods, where students develop general musicianship skills as well as learning technical skills and pieces. They learn to be all-round musicians, understanding and appreciating pieces, not just learning the notes.

Lessons are varied and follow a personal learning plan based on the prior knowledge, needs, interests, personality and strengths of each individual student.

Some work regularly towards examinations, other just play for the love and fun of it.

All students learn general music theory, specific pieces, technical work, listening and understanding, and how to read and write music. They perform solos and duets, and flute/clarinet students also learn to perform with piano accompaniment.

In addition to individual lessons, there are various opportunities to meet and play with other students, attend workshops, and perform solo and ensemble pieces in concerts and festivals.

Work is also done on performance anxiety when preparing for examinations, concerts and festivals.
