Biography

Claire Arthur

BSc. MA PGCE

I am a qualified and experienced music teacher and have been teaching music privately since 1990. I have taught all ages (from 4 to 65+) and all abilities (from complete beginners to diploma level students).

I have been playing piano since I was three years old and flute since I was 7 years old. I also play piccolo, clarinet, french horn, and trumpet, and have played with a variety of bands and orchestras. I currently play clarinet with the Halifax Symphony Orchestra.

In addition I have experience of working as a secondary school classroom teacher, a peripatetic music teacher (in primary and secondary schools), and I have taught undergraduate students at Leeds College of Music.

I am keen to encourage as many young people as possible to take part in musical activities, both in and out of school, and have experience of carrying out a wide range of Widening Participation and outreach activites at Cardiff University and Leeds College of Music.

I graduated in 1997 from Keele University, where I studied Music and Psychology as a Joint Honours degree, along with subsidiary subjects in Maths, Educational Theory, and Primary School Teaching. My specialist areas of study were Performance, Music Education and Music Psychology.

In 2003 I graduated from Cardiff University with a Master of Arts (MA) in Musicology (specialising in 20th Century French Music) and then completed a PGCE (secondary teacher training) in 2004.

I am a signatory for the Music Manifesto and have signed a commitment to the Musicleader Code of Conduct. I am a member of the National Association of Music Educators (NAME), the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE) and am a qualified Arts Award Advisor.

I am very committed to getting people involved in music in as many different ways as possible, and offer a range of teaching methods to suit all personalities, interests and abilities. See my Teaching Methods page for more details.
